Shenandoah National Park celebrates Junior Ranger Day
Activities for children will be highlighted when Shenandoah National Park celebrates National Junior Ranger Day on Saturday, April 23.
Visitors will be able to examine antlers, animal tracks, and curiosities of nature on touch tables, and they will be able to try on ranger uniforms at Dickey Ridge Visitor Center (mile 4.6 on Skyline Drive) and Byrd Visitor Center (milepost 51). Short talks about black bears will also be presented.

Shenandoah National Park Superintendent Martha Bogle announced that facilities closed during the winter season will begin opening in March and will continue to open through the spring.
Visitor Centers will be operated as follows: Harry F. Byrd Visitor Center will open March 25; Dickey Ridge Visitor Center will open on March 31; Loft Mountain Information Center will be closed.

Shenandoah National Park Fire Managers are planning several prescribed burns in Shenandoah National Park this spring. Ignition of the prescribed fire is dependent on weather conditions. Due to the uncertainty of the weather, it is not possible to predict the exact dates.
Prescribed fires are fires ignited on purpose by managers under a predetermined set of conditions, called a prescription, in order to accomplish specific resource management objectives. The prescription includes weather, fuel moisture, and resource availability parameters.

The Skyline Drive in Shenandoah National Park from Front Royal to Route 211 has reopened after the week-long closure due to the Smith Run Fire. The 105-mile scenic roadway through the park is now open its entire length.
All trails previously closed due to the 2,000-acre fire are also open. This includes Mount Marshall Trail from Skyline Drive to the intersection at the Bluff Trail; Appalachian Trail between Compton Gap and the Browntown Trail; Lands Run Gap Fire Road; and the Jenkins Gap Trail. Park firefighters will continue to monitor the area during the next week.
